I just read in an email newsletter that Dick Morris predicts much higher state taxes if they are forced to accept the proposed new federal health care guideline. I agree with him in that prognosis.
And that observation on the relationship between the states and the federal government brings to mind something that my artist friend back in Houston, Ron Gordon, told me. I've mentioned it before but it's even more relevant in the light of current government intrusions into our 'space'.
Ron told me that it was either his grandparents or his grandparents' grandparents who were alive during the Civil War. I forget which it was but.....for discussion's sake, let's just say it was his grandparents.....OK?
Anyway, they told him that the southerners who were alive then and who fought the North in the Civil War actually believed that the issue was much bigger than just slavery as 99% of the history books would have us believe.
They believed the large issue was 'states rights' .
According to them, it was a well known and accepted amongst southerners that slavery was an outmoded and unfair institution. They knew perfectly well that it was wrong and wasn't practical in the their emerging industrial economy.
But they also were trying to cope with the reality that there was no way in hell that they (i.e. the South) could just 'free' the many thousands of black slaves working within their predominantly agricultural economy.
To release that huge number of totally uneducated, non-Christian, and almost savage human beings into 'the streets' of America would have been a catastrophic socio-economic shock that could not be survived.
If you don't think that's so, just look at the situation today with clash between law abiding, educated society and our present non-lawabiding and uneducated (slight) minorities who just, by coincidence happen to be mostly Hispanic and/or Black.
And remember that the Northerners who controlled Congress at that time also wanted to give those newly freed blacks the 'vote' too. As I recall from my history classes, it wasn't a straight up 1:1 vote (i.e. 1 slave....1 vote). But still, because of the large numbers of black slaves living in the South at that time, far outnumbering the whites, they would have constituted a dramatically predominant voting block.
The Southerners werent' stupid. They knew this would be a disaster. So is it any wonder that they resented this intrusion and apparent destructive intent of the North? Is it any wonder that they rebelled? I think not.
That's why, as Ron's grandparents told him, that the South was actually defending their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness as guaranteed to all US citizens by our Constitution. That's the larger reason that they revolted, attacked Fort Sumpter, and....the rest is history.
That brings us up to today.
Here's a situation where the states are being more and more compelled by the federal government to do things that they don't want to do. And that's why there's a small but growing resistence movement amongst some state governement officials to resist.
Where will it lead to?
I don't know. But I do know that it'll lead somewhere. And, as I've often said....'people don't change'. When people are pushed to what they perceive as their limit, they eventaully, sooner or later, start to push back. That's how revolutions start.
Make no mistake about it. There will be a revolution in this country. Whether you're a part of it or just 'go with the flow' is a separate issue.
But history does repeat itself. It's as natural and normal as the sun coming up in the morning and going down in the evening.
The revolution is, I believe, going on right now. People like Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Bob Bar, Nancy Pelosi, Barak Obama, Hillery Clinton (et.al.), Warren Buffet, Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch (even though he's not a US citizen), Harry Reid, Barney Frank, and others.....They're all factors in a huge equation that's sorting itself, on a macro scale, as we go about our daily lives.
Most people probably do not see the significance of these events but rather look at it on a more personal (WIIFM...what's in it for me?) scale. For that reason, only a few people who realize the real significance of these times and the opportunity we have to make corrections that will dramatically impact our future.
I believe the issue for you and me is simply........"do I want to have a say in my future?"
Do you really understand what's happening, why it's important, what value system you want to endorse within this battle of ideas, and what level of involvement you want to take?"
Well........you better get it figured out. Or somebody else will make your decision for you. And you won't like it.
States rights are right next to individual rights. We've got a situation today where an abusive, oppressive and out-of-control federal bureaucracy is taking away more and more of our personal freedoms and the prerogatives of our states. Those are important freedoms that originally made this a great country.
Personally.......I prefer to be a freedom fighter.
