Here's a news article that I thought was interesting because, among other things, it shows that I was right again. And I'm not bragging. It's just sometimes surprise myself that I don't realize that a lot of my impulses and gut feelings seem to be based on some higher reality.
Remember that I've always said that the salsa dancers and teams who can provide well produced entertainment content stand to have a big 'first mover' advantage in the evolving and developing media world?
Well, this article shows where it's headed. Newspapers are saying that in their printed news as well as in their free online publications, that they simply can't afford to provide it for free anymore. More and more of them are moving toward paid subscription models in their delivered news products.
In my perception, that's just more proof that those of you, like Carlos and Azucena for example, who have the ability to do well designed choreographies and dramatic presentations of salsa dancing.....they'll be amongst the first to actually get paid for their product.
Probably, because they're usually not hard-core business people, most salsa dancers will continue to put their 'stuff' up on YouTube for free. But there'll be a few who know the value of what they provide who will sell it for what it's worth. People will pay for good entertainment. Louis Delgadillo and Ruby Rivera and Jerome Carter in Texas will attest to that.
Then there'll be others who continue to put their stuff up on YouTube for free giving away potentially thousands of dollars of value every year.
Jorege Elizanda had some good ideas he shared with me once about helping people do good chroeograpies to bachata music. And people like, uhhhh..what's her name, of Chuckies Choreography in Houston have done some remarkable and presumably profitable productions based around salsa themes. Also Houston Salsa Company does (or at least used to do) some very creative salsa production numbers.
There's a big battle going on right now between those people who want to keep the flow of information on the internet free and those who want to charge for it. On one level it's a matter of the cost of the infrastructure and technology required to delivery high quality internet connections and on another level it's a matter of people who strictly have a profit motive and want to 'corner the market'.
On another level it's a matter of certain types of 'we're better than you are' people who think that common people don't deserve all that knowledge and ability to communicate (read....'agitate').
But for the 'here and now', for salsa dancers it means that the first few to learn how to package and market thier 'product' will be able to make some good money and perhaps even build a rewarding career/business.
